The Russian invasion of Ukraine just a few days ago has brought a lot of surprising actions to light. In addition to the phenomenal people who have joined the fight, the financial support pouring in to help is astounding beyond belief. The donations that have filtered in have added up to a cool $4.1 million, and that’s all in cryptocurrency.
Elliptic’s chief scientist, Tom Robinson,
“Cryptocurrency is particularly suited to international fundraising because it doesn’t respect national boundaries and it’s censorship-resistant — there is no central authority that can block transactions, for example, in response to sanctions.”
A few days ago, Bitcoin donations were in the neighborhood of $400,000 and climbing. Over the weekend, that amount jumped to about $675,000 until a single $3 million gift came through. Ukraine will be able to use that currency to provide for the new troops rolling in every day, and you’ll be surprised who some of them are.
Former Miss Grand Ukraine
Anastasiia Lenna posed with her rifle like a sniper ready to take it on, “Встречаем понедельник в хорошем настроении и бодром боевом духе.” Translated into English, “We meet Monday in a good mood and cheerful fighting spirit.”
Anastasiia Lenna was Ukraine’s 2015 Miss Grand International beauty contest winner. But today, she’s fighting against the Russian invasion. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for all citizens to join the fight, reminiscent of wars centuries ago. Lenna took the call to action seriously, put down her crown, and picked up her rifle.
Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali Klitschko
One, the mayor of Kyiv, and the other, former champion heavyweight boxer, are brothers who have joined the fight. Firstly, Vitali Klitschko is the mayor and at one time also held the heavyweight belt in boxing. But his brother Wladimir who held the belt as well, went on Twitter to plead for support.
“I’m calling to all international partners to observe this tragedy that is happening nowadays in Ukraine… I just want to tell you we must stay united against this aggression, against Russian aggression. Don’t let it continue happening in Ukraine. Don’t let it happen in Europe and eventually the world. United, we’re strong. Support Ukraine.”
A Strange Donations Twist
Pussy Riot is a feminist band based out of Russia. But they have been outspoken against Putin before. They’ve even gone to jail for it. Now, they are not only speaking out against the Russian invasion but funding the Ukrainians through unique flag auctions through the sales of NFTs. The funds will go to NGO Proliska, a non-governmental humanitarian effort, and the Return Alive Foundation, also a citizen-run organization that has aided the military with equipment, ammunition, food, and medical supplies.
“Activism is the only reason I joined Web3. Now, when I’m so deeply ashamed of my government, I simply have to try to help Ukrainians,” Pussy Riot co-founder Nadya Tolokonnikova.
In Ukraine, it doesn’t matter who they are. They can be a beauty queen, the mayor, or a boxing champion worth $90 million; they aren’t just all talk. Citizens are coming from all walks of life to fight against the Russians. Crypto is pouring in from worldwide and will help out tremendously for the cause.
